Sonia Beker Educator and author of "Symphony on Fire"


Sonia Pauline Beker has two master's degrees in English and American Literature from the University of Kent, Canterbury, England, and in Teaching English as a Second Language from the School for International Training in Vermont. She has taught ESL in Boston, Tokyo and 25 years of high school ESL for the New York City Department of Education. She also held the position of Bilingual Liaison at the Brooklyn Superintendent's Office. Sonia wrote and published a book about her Holocaust survivor parents and how they navigated through concentration, POW, work and DP camps as classical musicians. The book is entitled, "Symphony on Fire: A Story of Music and Spiritual Resistance During the Holocaust." Recently married to Steven Zucker, Sonia currently resides in Brooklyn Heights and teaches ESL Reading and Literature at the School of Visual Arts.
