Barbara Spectre is the Founding Director of Paideia, the European Institute of Jewish Studies in Sweden, and has lived in Sweden since 1999. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, educated in New York, she and her husband made Aliyah to in 1967. In Israel she was on the faculty of the Shalom Hartman Institute of Jerusalem, where she taught Jewish thought, was the founding chair of the Schechter Institute in Jerusalem, was on the faculty of the Melton Center of the Hebrew University, and the Yellin College of Education where she repeatedly was cited as Outstanding Lecturer. She has lectured widely in the USA and Europe. Her publications include “Education of Adult Jewish Leaders in a Pan-European Perspective” in the International Handbook of Jewish Education, and together with Noam Zion of the Hartman Institute, the two volume: “A Different Light: The Hanukkah Book of Celebration.” She is a recipient of the Max Fischer Prize for Excellence in Education and The King’s Medal conferred on her by the King of Sweden
